Community Foundation of Ottawa
2008 ANNUAL REPORT
Types of Funds/Community Foundation Grantmaking

TYPES OF FUNDS

Grantmaking

The Community Foundation of Ottawa manages a wide variety of funds on behalf of an ever-growing number of donors. Community Foundation funds offer donors the maximum tax benefits for each charitable gift while simplifying the tax reporting process. With its focus on endowments, donors can be assured that their funds will provide support for the community forever. Any of the following types of funds may be established with the Community Foundation:

DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS allow donors to advise the Community Foundation each year as to which charitable organizations are to receive grants from their funds, and in what amounts.

DESIGNATED FUNDS allow donors to choose specific charitable organizations that will be perpetual beneficiaries of the annual income generated by their gifts.

FIELD-OF-INTEREST FUNDS allow donors to direct grants to a particular area of interest, such as social services, the arts or the environment.

COMMUNITY FUNDS constitute the core of the Community Foundation's ability to strengthen our community by meeting emerging opportunities and address issues of importance as they change over time.

EDUCATIONAL AWARDS provide support to students pursuing academic goals through awards, scholarships and bursaries.

MEMORIAL FUNDS can be established through the Community Foundation in order to create a lasting tribute to a special member of the community or loved one.

ORGANIZATIONAL ENDOWMENTS can be established by organizations with registered charitable status in order to benefit from the Community Foundation's professional endowment management expertise.

FLOW-THROUGH FUNDS are for donors who do not want to endow their donations or for those who wish to combine current gifts with endowment earnings in order to increase the amount of their grant(s).

The minimum amount needed to establish any type of fund, with the exception of Educational Awards, is $5,000 (over a period of five years). The minimum required to establish an Educational Award is $10,000.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANTMAKING

Through its grantmaking programs, the Community Foundation of Ottawa is committed to seeding, nurturing, supporting and strengthening our community. Grants are made in support of social services, animal welfare, arts and culture, community economic development, education, environment and health, primarily within, but not limited to, the Ottawa region.

The Community Grants program derives its funds from the earnings of an endowment which is invested. Due to the effect of poor market returns on the investment portfolio, the Foundation is not in a position to accept applications for the 2009 competitive grants program.

During this period of transition, we are working on the realignment of our grantmaking priorities with our new strategic plan. We will therefore be dedicating significant time to the planning and communication of changes to our Community and Strategic Impact Grants programs, including the provision of detailed grant guidelines.

Periodic updates will be posted on our website so please check back at
