In 2010, supporters of the Community Foundation of Ottawa took a silver-lined cloud and gilded it with gold. After a year of great economic recovery in 2009, you took us to heights we never would have dreamed of just a short time before, almost doubling the amount of your gifts in one year and allowing us to provide grants to a record number of important causes in the community. And you all made invaluable contributions to the ongoing work of the Foundation, including the milestone release of our fifth Ottawa's Vital Signs report, along with the many events and presentations you involved us in throughout the year. We are pleased to welcome you to our 2010 Annual Report, in which we celebrate the following accomplishments that could never have been achieved without the Midas touch you shared through us:

  • Donor generosity resulted in gifts of close to $8 million to the Foundation, almost double the donations of 2009.
  • We were able to provide over $6 million in grants to close to 450 charitable organizations, almost 100 more than the year before.
  • The Community Foundation established a new Responsible Investing Strategy that will continue to evolve through 2011 as we investigate new and creative ways to help our community while providing both social and financial returns to our stakeholders.
  • The fifth annual Ottawa's Vital Signs report was launched at a large-scale public event at the National Arts Centre in the lead-up to the municipal election, featuring a lively panel discussion and moving spoken word performance.
  • The Foundation was recognized with an unprecedented number of Wilmer Shields Rich Awards for Excellence in Communications for our 2009 online Annual Report, Ottawa's Vital Signs report and the new Donors' Advantage newsletter by the international Council on Foundations. It was also awarded an Honourable Mention for financial reporting in the 2009 Annual Report by the Queen's School of Business.
  • Community Foundation staff participated in an ever-growing number of events and presentations, taking on leadership roles on such important initiatives as the City of Ottawa's Poverty Reduction Strategy and the Community Development Framework.

2010 was an exciting year in which we saw great results turn into ever more promising beginnings. We have you, our donors and grantee organizations, to thank for that. We are also deeply grateful to our dedicated Board of Governors, volunteers and staff team, all of whom make achieving extraordinary heights an everyday occurrence. The Community Foundation also recognizes the importance of the networks and partnerships that make us stronger every year, through which we are able to deepen our support of the community. Thus, we gratefully acknowledge the support of Community Foundations of Canada and the Transatlantic Community Foundation Network.
