For good … forever. Those three little words represent what we strive for each day here at the Community Foundation of Ottawa. It is a lofty ideal, and never were the implications of that purpose more clear to us than in 2009. Between the highs and lows we all experienced over the last couple of years, it has remained our singular goal to fulfill the promise of helping to make good things happen in our community every day, for all time.
We dug in. We aimed high. Here are a few of the accomplishments we're proud to share with you from the year 2009:
- Donor generosity soared, resulting in gifts of over $5 million to the Community Foundation, matching those of any "average" year in our history.
- Despite being unable to invite applications, Foundation staff worked closely with donors and community partners to provide $4.3 million in grants to support some of the most critical needs in the community.
- We established a new granting policy that guarantees annual grantmaking, independent of market volatility.
- Our returns rebounded to 17.6%, reflecting a strong performance by our investment managers, who outperformed the improving markets.
- The Community Foundation of Ottawa won a bronze Business Achievement Award from the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce in a new not-for-profit category.
- The Community Foundation was honoured with a silver Award for Excellence in Communications for our 2008 electronic Annual Report by the Council on Foundations in Washington, DC.
It has been a rewarding year full of ground-breaking achievements, none of which could have been realized without the unwavering support of our donors and the community at large. We are also greatly indebted to the dedication of our exceptional Board of Governors, volunteers and staff team, all of whom worked in concert to attain one common goal: for good…forever. It's a promise we look forward to fulfilling for many, many years to come. Forever, in fact.
